The Progressive Shamanists, including Rob Prigge, Rob Kowtko and Greg Pichler, met at the studio in Tanglewood, Pennsylvania on the 1983 Spring Break at Lehigh University, the weekend, starting Friday, March 25, 1983. During that weekend the group recorded eight songs on a Tascam 22-4, 4-track, reel-to-reel, tape recorder. Pichler purchased the reel-to-reel tape drive expressly from the session that weekend.
With the addition of the reel-to-reel tape drive, the quality of the music, that the group produced, improved dramatically. Further, with the reel-to-reel tape drive, the members were able to separately record their respective vocal parts. Prior to having access to the reel-to-reel tape drive, the group had only a cassette deck to record music with. With only the cassette deck to record music with the group had to perform all of the parts at the same time.
Although none of the group members developed any new original material over the course of the weekend, the group did record fresh renditions of its standard repertoire, which focused more on original material and less on cover songs written by other artists—the one song by the Police, Message In A Bottle, being the only exception. The group's renditions of their original music from the weekend session include, Twenty-One Years (Pichler), Charleen (Pichler), The Grasshopper Boogie (R Prigge, R Kowtko, Greg Pichler), Fire In The Night (Kowtko) and Celestial Wanderer (Kowtko).
The group's renditions were also a huge improvement over past mterial. Rob Prigge's drum solo on Pichler's song, Charleen, is masterful.
Prior to the weekend session Pichler and Kowtko had agreed to donate the lead vocal parts of a number of their songs to Prigge to perform so as to balance out the lead vocal responsibility. Prior to the session over the weekend, starting on Friday, March 25, 1983 the group member, who wrote the original song, took responsibility for that song's lead vocal part. Specifically, Pichler gave responsibility of the lead vocal part of his original song, Charleen, to Rob Prigge to contribute, while Pichler contributed a background vocal part on the track. Likewise, Kowtko gave responsibility of the lead vocal part of his original song, Fire In The Night, to Prigge to contribute. Kowtko's song, Fire In The Night, did not include any backing vocal parts.
The video includes still photo images of all the members of the group over the course of the weekend, starting Friday, March 25, 1983.
